Leather cleaning question

I just received a scabbard for my 1907 pattern SMLE bayonet. It is covered in grease - not cosmolene as far as I can see, but there is a lot of it! I would really appreciate any guidance on cleaning this stuff off and then treating the leather so it doesn't deteriorate. https://farm5.staticflickr.co...

It is possibly original as the hole it sits in shows clean wood under it and the brass has little verdigris because of the tight fit.

The edge is slightly chamfered and the screw hole is countersunk so it will only fit one way. They built rifles in those days :D
