Re: Arlington National Cemetery

Too many government employees see their jobs as merely a way to pass the time until they are eligible for retirement. What are they going to do to these people-bend their dog tags?

Re: Wearing non-entitled medals

The US military has gone overboard on medals since Vietnam ended and that greatly cheapens them IMHO. On another board I visit one Vietnam veteran said any medals from that conflict awarded to anyone above the rank of 1st Lieutenant are suspect, so many generals in that conflict received the Disting...

A Final Memorial Day thought

Which also applies to Remembrance Day (?)-UK, Anzac Day, and whatever are the appropriate days in Canada, France and other members countries. Take a few minutes to think about those whose fates have never been determined, whose final resting places have yet to be located, and whose families never ha...

Re: It's Memorial Day in the US

I don't think we love war so much as for a variety of reasons we haven't been able to avoid it. Also we have never been bled white by a war as have the French and British in WWI and the Russians in WWII. We had the Civil War but one of the ironies of that was that while one section of the country wa...

Re: 70th Anniversary of the Dunkirk rescue: Operation Dynamo

My mother and grandmother knew Charles Lightoller, Second Officer-and senior surviving officer-of theTitanic.
In 1940 at the age of 66 he took his boat, The Sundowner and crossed the Channel with a crew of 3-his eldest son and an 18 year old Sea Scout. They brought 130 men back.

Re: Wearing non-entitled medals

I note how many people-like the one from Connecticutt-don't realize how well documented awards are in the US military. There was the disgraceful case in 1996 of the then Chief of Naval Operations Jeremy Boorda committing suicide when he was exposed as a fraud and a poseur, wearing Vs for Valor he wa...

Re: The Dutch will not forget

The Dutch fought as well they could considering they had basically a 1914 vintage army and AFAIK hadn't fought a
land war since about 1815.

Re: The evil that was

I like to read about Vietnam, not so much to relive as to understand. I maintain that much of the Vietnam bungle was the result of having political leaders who weren't as smart as they thought they were . One thing that I have learned form my readings on Vietnam was that our relationship with the So...

Re: Anzac Day

I first learned of Anzac Day in 1963 in the 8th Grade here in New Jersey, we had an Australian speak to us about in Assembly.
