The Krag-Jorgenson .30-40 replaced the Springfield .45-70 as the primary U.S. military rifle beginning in 1892 and remained in service until superceded by the Springfield 1903 .30-06 in 1903. This rifle was used by the regular US forces during the Spanish-American War of 1898. It also saw action during the Phillipine Insurrection. The superiority of the Spanish 7mm Mausers during that conflict led to the introduction of the '03. They Krag was the first US military rifle to use smokeless ammunition.

Krag Rifle
The Krag has been rather wrongly pilloried as inferior to the Spanish Mausers when in fact,it was more an ammunition deficiency than any inherent weakness of the Krag design.
The Krag was not amenable to stripper clip loading but was very fast to reload by dumping loose rounds into its magazine.
Ballistcally, the .30-40 round could have been greatly improved,as was the original .30-'06,by the use of a lighter more aerodynamic bullet.
Finally, our so called "smokeless" powder was far behind European developments of the period.
Just gotta stick up for the Old Girl!
