Why of course the Germans had an extra million rifles lying around and sent them to the US, and
then it got printed in the newspaper.......
They didn't need any more, or new, rifles on the Western Front....... I'm sure.....

Looks like it should have been from The Weekly World News - or maybe the Tonopah Daily Bonanza was run on the same presses

The war is playing hell with German nobility. Counts and barons are being killed like a plague had gotten hold of them. And in a way....maybe it had.

No wonder I never ran into anybody who's last name was Finek von Finekenstein in my entire life... a name like that you would remember.

When in doubt..... write exciting headlines and fill in the details with hyperbole. It sells papers.

Contest against British won by "Negro" and "negro" crew. Reminds me of Blazing Saddles for some reason. The railroad gang of black laborers answer a demand to "give us a song" from the cowboys with " I get no kick from Champagne..." and the cowboys in turn start doing a a Negro Spiritual to show the "Negroes"... (actually the universally banned N word they used instead) what they meant by a song.

If you have a job that doesn't help the war effort you are going to be drafted. That includes professional ball players as also unnecessary but if you are an actor or a stage entertainer of some sort....well you are necessary. It would be hell to be so insignificant you are non useful and suitable only for cannon fodder as a step up in life......but in those days nobody cared about hurting anybodies feelings.

Brit ship transporting US soldiers is sunk. Besides one company down below decks two soldiers on watch when the ship began to sink after the torpedo hit were also lost. I guess they should have followed that old military instruction to remain on guard post until properly relieved. Maybe they figured a sinking ship canceled that order and fell back on "every man for himself". As it turned out they should have stuck around and waited for their turn in the life boats.

Memorial Day in the US is day after tomorrow. Back in 1918 there was a Memorial Day event announced in Pensacola Florida. Pensacola had a Navy base and Army instillation. Notice the crowd , as part of the ceremony, including old soldiers, were expected to take the oath of allegiance to the US, followed by the pledge to the flag. Note the oath the President of the US takes is even more brief and reads as follows..... although few of them in my life time have confined themselves to the letter of the oath:
US Constitution, Article II, Section 1
Before he enter on the execution of his office, he shall take the following oath or affirmation: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."
