SVT-40 advice and assitance

Post by david kroning » Sun Oct 10, 2010 9:18 pm

Hi, I'm the proud new owner of a SVT-40 rifle that I bought from an enormous WWII collection whose owner passed away. It got it at a very good price (400 dollars Canadian). The rifle is in wonderful condition and appears to have simply been heavily greased and put on display for the last 60 years. I took it to the range and fired a few rounds and it is a pleasure to shoot. I was expecting a heavier kick for a 7.62x54r round. But, the thing is almost comparable to my .223 Tikka T3.

A few of the rounds did not chamber correctly, so I think something in the gas system needs adjusted. But, I don,t know how to do it.

Also, I need some help knowing how to clean and maintain this thing. It seems like a very good weapon for moose hunting...it's very light and I couldn't believe how accurate it was even while I was sighting it in.

I'd like to know everything I can know about my new rifle if there are any other SVT-40 owners out there who can help.

Thanks a lot.

Welcome to MAH. I don't have an SVT-40....although I sure wish I did. I did get my hands on one at a range in Mississippi once, thanks to one of our moderators. I'm sure someone with some experience will notice your post before long. And you are right, the lighter recoil is a surprise after shooting a Nagant using the same kind of bullets.

Well, thank you.

I'm going to try to figure out how to take some pictures of it...so someone can tell me where it was made, etc. I'm just mostly worried at the moment about cleaning it since I put 10 rounds through it and then couldn't figure out how to get the cleaning rod out and discovered I have no brush in my cleaning kit to run through the barrel.

This is my first WWII gun...so I'm hoping I don't break the thing.

Surplus Rifles has a page on how to take an SVT-40 down and put it back together again.

I shouldn't worry too much about that. Milsurp have to be gruntproof
