New Zealand buy back

Post by Niner » Sat Jul 13, 2019 11:11 am

Because of the mass shooting in New Zealand at a Mosque which killed 50 people by a lone gunman, New Zealand rushed to band most semi auto weapons and all weapons that looked like semi auto military weapons. It was done about as quickly as someone handing you your order out the window at a drive up fast food joint.

Recently the first buy back effort happened. Only 68 people responded....perhaps that represented a large actual number of people in New Zealand who own such weapons. I have no clue. However, they paid out something over 200,000 New Zealand dollars for those weapons. That means....according to a Google, with NZ money only about two thirds worth of American per dollar... that each M15 or other look like brought the seller about $2000 equivalent in American money.

It would seem to me....that if some enterprising New Zealander were to get in his boat and work a deal with some Chinese or North Koreans..or any number of other regional countries...... or if I could pack up my gun collection and move there and cash them all in upon entry....or if pigs could fly.

When the Great Australian Buy Back was in force enterprising NZ fishermen met their Aussie opposite numbers about midway between the two places and sold the Aussies lots and lots of semi-auto rifles particularly Browning SLRs,
the Australian Government bought more SLRs in Victoria than had been sold there originally. :D

Unfortunately, we can't reverse the procedure!!

Then there were the blokes in the Northern Territory who had WWII weapon dumps on their stations (ranches), they cleaned up big time

The Buy Back was a no questions asked operation.
Self Defence is not only a Right, it is an Obligation.

Think about this a minute. AIM gunshop can sell a Chinese SKS for just over $400 in the US. That's not a real bargain but only the going price now days. But.... if you had one and a government buy back would give you $2000 for it the investment would be very profitable.

Prohibition in the US created organized crime of a serious and often violent nature and plenty of illegal booze. Eventually the country came to its senses on booze. In the US, if there were a banning or buy back of semi auto weapons, there is no way it would work. It would just turn a lot of people into criminals.

"Washington...
The city of Seattle has experimented with Gun Buy Back Programs since the early 1990s. Seattle's 1992 gun buyback was initiated in response to a string of shootings in a local neighborhood. The buyback program was watched with great interest given the local demographic and the generally positive public support for the buyback from residents of Seattle and the surrounding area. A public health survey titled "Money for Guns" was conducted and while it concluded that no statistically significant result was produced on Seattle's gun crime or gun death ratio, the report maintained that a larger buyback program would be sure to yield positive results. Over 20 years later Seattle would again make headline for its bold gun buyback program in 2013, but perhaps not for the reasons the programs sponsors and organizers would have liked. While the program, could be considered a success, collecting more than 700 guns, handing out almost $70,000 in gift cards and even netting a Stinger missile launcher tube (minus the missile), the program also had a widely unanticipated effect from the local gun buying community. Hundreds of gun buyers showed up to the event seeking to offer cash for valuable antiques or functioning second hand firearms. The lack of any need for background check in transactions involving private firearms sales turned the city sponsored event into an open air gun bazaar. Since then other cities have experienced similar situations, including private sales and/or local gun owners taking advantage of lucrative gift card offers to unload rusted or non-functioning firearms onto the police."........

And partly because of this, WA state now requires background checks for ALL gun sales.......... liberal assholes.

Here is the Wiki link about other buy-backs in the US states, I especially like MARYLAND......

Peace is that brief, quiet moment in history.......... when everybody stands around reloading.
