MOPAR:
Your rifle has "lost" the second stage. It could be from wear or crud, but the most likely cause is somebody has mothered it in the past and got carried away, resulting in insufficient sear engagement in the second stage. If a good cleaning doesn't "fix" it, your best option is to do some parts swapping, unless you are very experienced in working with trigger mechanisms (sounds like you're not). The easiest swap that may help is to change out the cocking piece; if that doesn't work, the trigger linkage assembly. Both are available from Tennessee Gun Parts, and Layne is a great guy to do business with.
A safe K31 trigger has two stages; will reset from the first stage and will hold 1300 gram weights. (That works out to 2.86 lbs or something like that).
