Steyr-Hahn

Post by Drake » Mon May 18, 2009 9:39 pm

Another photo set, a Steyr-Hahn M1912 I picked up a few months back.

This pistol was made in 1915 and is chambered in 9x23 Steyr.

The holster is a reproduction but is fairly faithful to the original. It has a pocket for a loaded 8-round magazine charger. I believe the original holsters held two in this pocket.

The front end of the slide and frame has always reminded me of the Colt 1900/1902 pistols.

http://hooverae.com/upload/files/180509/8896449.jpeg[/pic]

The bulky but unusually small sights. It is a quite accurate pistol but the grip angle is a little awkward. I find a 'natural' hold puts my front sight a few inches low.

The pistols has two notches on the slide for the safety lever. The magazine follower holds the slide open when empty, the safety lever can be used as a slide lock in this position. This allows you to single load cartridges into the magazine if charger clips are not available. The button above the left grip panel is not a slide release, but a magazine release. It retracts the cartridge stop to expel cartridges loaded in the magazine.

When the slide is closed and the lever rotated upward it locks the slide and hammer.

http://hooverae.com/upload/files/180509/0045567.jpeg[/pic]

If the hammer is thumbed back it will automatically disengage the safety and rotate the lever downward.

http://hooverae.com/upload/files/180509/0620235.jpeg[/pic]

If the hammer is cocked the hammer must be pulled back slightly to engage the safety lever (just like a New Safety Mauser C.96) this lifts the hammer from the sear to completely disengage it from the trigger linkage.

To load the pistol, the user places a loaded charger in the guides. The clip will normally hold the action open but only if positioned just right - it's much easier to just flip the safety on to lock the slide during loading.

Press the rounds down into the magazine and remove the clip.

The pistol field stripped, note the unusual lugs on the barrel.

http://hooverae.com/upload/files/180509/0809787.jpeg[/pic]

Upon firing the slide and barrel move rearward locked together until the curved lug on the barrel travels far enough along the cam path in the frame to rotate the barrel 20° - at this point the slide and barrel unlock. The barrel continues to the rear until the horizontal lug strikes the transom in the frame just ahead of the magazine well. The slide travels until stopped by force of the recoil and main springs - the slide returns forward, stripping a round from the magazine and feeding it into the chamber as the barrel is forced forward and rotates along the cam path to lock the upper lugs into the slide.

Size comparison with P.08. A bit of trivia- a number of M1912's were rebarrelled to 9mm Luger by Nazi Germany. These pistols were marked '08' on the slide to indicate the 'Patronen 08'

Some of the stampings on the pistol. It's my understanding that Wn indicates 'Wiener-Neustadt', or 'New Vienna' (literally Vienna-Newtown as I read it).

http://hooverae.com/upload/files/180509/1947668.jpeg[/pic]

The K on a number of parts is some form of inspection stamp, and the S on the read left side of the slide stands for 'Scarfe patrone'.
I've been told this is some form of unit marking on the lanyard loop, but I have had no success translating it.

That's all for now.

Great effort and good post. If you don't win the pin and patch drawing, I think I'll send you a pin and a patch anyway.

Wow, I wasn't aware of any competition. I actually have a number of these writeups for recent acquisitions I've been 'meaning to' post. I guess I should get around to them.
