A NEW, OLD find...

Post by northwolf » Fri Oct 31, 2008 4:42 pm

.. I got a bunch of VZ24's, bought in CANADA about 20 years ago, all in poor conditions AND i bought a bunch of receivers in Vz24 and FN (2 FN).

AND lo and behold, I just checked a VZ24 with the BRNO markings on the receiver and the Vz24 on the rail. The stock looked beat, with a metal strip "repair" of the top hand guard in front of the receiver and a dirty, oily appearance in total!

I took a cleaning patch soaked with Hoppes #9 three times and a brass brush 2 times, a clean patch 4 times and... LO AND BEHOLD... a clean, sharp, crisp bore!!!

I bought the stuff wanting only the receivers, not thinking of a shooter, but this "thing" is good to go!!

I just have to clean up the stock, clean up the grime and grease, and I have a happy shooter!!

I don't want to boast, BUT I'm happy as shit, to get a (what I consider) a potential great shooter!!

I think I paid $25 for a "very poor" Vz24!!

 I'm dancing!! ..LOL...LOL..

The Serial is xxxx J3

Sorry, No, all are spoken for.... I have new barrels for all actions I have left. This winter I'll rebarrel 2. one in 6mmX284 and one I'm trying to decide on 6.5X06, 6.5X284 or 6.5Rem Mag. I have reamers for all of them and with the 6.5's, I have to see what groups/velocity I'm getting and then decide to make it permanent.

I'm also working on a Martini Enfield to put on a .375X30-40 Ackley Improved.

AHHHh ....6mm/284 is a great Palma cartridge, I built one several yrs ago on a Turk mauser. I am in the process of locating an action to build a 338/06 then the next project will be a 6mm PPC.

I have a 30-06 barrel I'm going to put in a Mark X if the 6.5Rem Mag doesn't pan out and use that bolt, since it would be open for a Magnum, for a 30-338 I have a reamer for also. What I read about the 6.5X284, I'm somewhat sure to keep it at that calibre. The barrel is 26" and Contour #54 and could end up at about 23-24".

In regards to your 338-06. Wouldn't it be better to go for the 338-284? It is shorter then the 06 and you can seat the bullet farther out, gaining a bit more room for powder. I do the same in my .375X284 and seat a 300gr Win Silvertip in the first cannelure. The chamber has a long throat too.
