30-40 Krag

Post by PeterN2 » Tue Aug 23, 2005 5:53 pm

I had a look at one of these last weekend. It is the first one I have handled in the flesh. It was in very nice condition with a bright bore. Are the bolts numbered on these, as I has a quick look but only found 'S11'. The rifle number was 297xxx (I can't remember the rest) but it didn't end in 11. There was a bit of the stock just in front of the bolt handle when closed broken off. It looked like it had been done some time ago. The dealer told me that this was a common fault. How true? An interesting rifle. The dealer doesn't really want to sell it as he has been using it himself so I didn't get a price. Are these in the arm and leg category or more reasonable?

Regards

Peter

Over here Peter they seem to be in the body parts categories.

Saying that a good condition one I'd certainly spring for as there rarity will only get rarer.

My policy is if I see it I buy it, the old investment cliche is getting truer by the hour.

Matching, boxed No4Ts are now going for £3000 I got mine 5 years ago for £800, beats the city any day. :D

I have 2 1898's, one made in 1899 and the other in 1902. Neither have the wood issues you mention and I've never heard of it anywhere else. Bolts aren't marked either. It's not uncommon for a Krag in a complete but not perfect condition such as mine are, to bring $1000 or more here.

I've seen a couple examples with that certain piece of stock chipped off, but I can't say for certian if it's a common fault. It doesn't seem likt it would take a lot of trauma to break it....considering it doesn't have much support.

I have taken several deer with my Krag, and its a pleasure to shoot!

I purchased it as a sporter, all but the stock appear to be orig.(Model 1898) I've thought about putting it back orig, but I'm not really into collecting, and the stocks I've found are rather expensive.
I'm not afraid of heights, just afraid of widths
