KOREAN WAR. July 27th 2023 marks the 70th Anniversary of the signing of an armistice agreeing that the country would remain divided.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we WILL remember them.............

I only have the “Butcher’s Apron”, the UN Medal as I was there in the truce period, only got shot at illegally,

In Vietnam I was attached to the 6th Battalion 31st Infantry as one thing and the other of the FO team. The 31st Regiment of the US Army was formed in the Philippines before WWI. They served in China and then served on a thankless mission during WWI in Russia and Siberia. In WWII they were back in the Philippines and all ended up dead or captured and were part of the Bataan death march at the start of the US part in the war. "No mamma. No poppa. No Uncle Sam" to pull them out of the Philippines. Not a wonderfully glorious history. They had never served on American soil down until after the Korean war. Their real high point, or low point, was when they served in the Korean war. The movie Pork Chop Hill was about them. Then at the Chosin Reservoir, a generally told Marine hero story, they were the lone Army regiment off on one end of the Reservoir and totally unsupported when the Chinese got into the war and came in force. When the Marines were pulled back,supported in their withdrawal, the Army 31st Infantry had to fight their way back over many miles in harsh winter conditions to friendly lines without any support. One battalion was wiped out nearly entirely on the way, many men were captured and only a remnant made it back to the fall back line. There's a PBS documentary on how awful their retreat was. Thankfully, the 6/31st and the 4/31st, that served in different divisions in Vietnam had less arduous histories.

Robert and I were in different companies in 6/31, him in A and me in D, both on FO team. Having read some about
what happened to the unit in WWII and Korea, I'm thankful that we didn't suffer the extreme horrors they did and we both survived.
