From a hundred years ago in a Birmingham Alabama newspaper comes this story. It seems a little believe it or not...but...maybe it's exactly true.

He was wounded three times by a sniper before knocking off his first machinegunners. Then while making further enemy kills and knocking out machinegun positions, has his right leg shot off. Them crawling with one leg to his last objective, takes out two more Germans . Then....on his back, waves his platoon mates forward and dies with a smile on his lips. I can swallow that entire story with a rather large gulp, with even the crawling forward with one leg, but somehow choke on the part where he is waving his comrades on and the smile on his lips in his finial breath.
