All I can say about the "ZIP" is that USFA must be humoring some designer/engineer that they feel has some other value to the company. (or it's from the owners 12 yo son....)

At first glance I thought it was a movie prop, and then realized it wasn't..........
It's hard to imagine that someone actually thought this Zip gun was a good idea......

Usage..... Designed and prototyped in 1987 for use by the US Olympic Team in the 1988 Olympics. Don't quite know what held it back, but probably some sort of rule changes.....
(Just to add to the frustration, it is out there on the internet,but is a real bugger to find.)

I would love to actually see this gun. As far as I can tell it was designed to “overcome” the ISU’s banning the Russian MC-3 (The “Upsidedown” Gun) after the 1956 Olympics with the ruling “The axis of a gun barrel shall not be lower than the upper part of the shooter’s wrist.” All in an effort to reduce or eliminate “muzzle flip” during the Rapid Fire event.
It appears that the barrel axis is as low as possible without breaking the ISU rule. Then the recoil spring is cantilevered to the lowest point by what appears to be a “cage” that connects it to the bolt/slide up at the top. Supposedly the recoil action on the spring would counteract muzzle flip from the upper barrel.
Anyway, it was Smith & Wesson that designed it. You were close with “Nail Gun” as it’s nickname was the”Staplegun”.
