1903A3 Springfield .30-06

Post by Jethro » Thu Jun 23, 2005 9:54 am

When the US started gearing up for WW II, the 03 Springfield was still the primary rifle, although the M1 Garand was starting to be deployed. To increase production, numerous shortcuts were taken to speed up the process. The most obvious change in the 03A3 was the replacement of the ladder sight with a peep sight on the rear of the receiver with a much improved capability for elevation and windage adjustment. The 03A3 remainded a highly accurate rifle was was the basis for US sniper rifles during WW II. During the war, these rifles were manufactured by Remington and Smith-Corona using the tooling from Springfield.

The hardcore shooters in the local milsurp matches are split between the 03A3 and the M1 Garand as the weapon of choice for trying to win the competitions.

Winchester 03A3 ???????????

If you can find a Winchester 03A3, it will be a million-dollar rifle. 03A3's were made by Reminton and Smith-Corona. The tooling from Rock Island was provided to Remington (for a price) for the manufacture of the M1903. Most of the tooling was not used for 03A3 production.
