On the first day of the Somme Britain lost 57,470 killed. The most Brit soldiers killed on one day in any war. Compare that to 58,220 US dead from the entire Vietnam war. Horrific numbers that the Brits sustained.

Duncan started this string. I'm sad to report he died recently. Between him and me we posted more than anyone else on this site for a lot of years. However, now we all are witnessing some Trump madness in Iran that by tomorrow night might turn into an atrocity that far surpasses his child murdering friend in Israel's actions when he shuts down life support in Iran for hundreds of millions of people. I'm drawn to this old string today for my latest newspaper a hundred years ago post.
In a Washington newspaper a hundred years ago today a few Senator members who had served in the "Great War" offered their reflections nine years after the US had entered WWI. What they had to say at the time, assuming the all stayed alive another decade and a half, would certainly come back to haunt them.
